Rebuilding 100/6 Transmission

I'm rebuilding a 1957 100/6 tranny and would like to know what type of gasket sealer I should use? One individual with old british car experience even went so far as to tell me to discard the gaskets altogether and just use RTV black for a good seal? Any advice would be appreciated

I've always had good luck with the supplied fiber gaskets plus a sealant on the removable part. I highly reccomend using copper washers under the bolt heads on any bolts under the oil line. Randy told me about this trick and believe me it works!

I use the paper gaskets, supplemented with Permatex 518 flange sealant (I'm not a fan of any of the available silicone sealants). Only a thin "smear" is required__if you follow the manufacturere's recommendation of "1/4 bead..." I promise that you'll do more harm than good, as the excess sealant squeezes out and blocks all manner of oil transfer orifices.

I have some pictures from a couple-few side-shifts I've done in the past few years, if you're interested or want to take the time to view them:

My bad, the 518 flange sealant is a Loctite product, not from Permatex.

I use Threebond 1215. Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Hino, Subaru and Ducati all specify it by name so that is a pretty good endorsement. Dabble enough on both sides of the gasket with thumb and fingers until it just feels slimy.

I use Yama-Bond. You can get it at your Yamaha dealer. Must be same product that BN4 is talking about. Best I ever used !

 Sorry Randy, I meant to say Permatex not a sealant.
