Ok,

1964 MGB,

Very rustfree pull handle car.

So I understand my options are limited. Whereas I did the Rivergate 5 speed in my Midget before changing my mind and going motor swap, I do not see and 5 speed conversions for the early car like mine. Am I correct in gleening that this is because of the smaller transmission tunnel?

And if I buy this other 3 synchro box from a yard nearby here to go through it first,,,, how much is it really going to cost if I make everything pretty near perfect inside?

Doing the work myself so, just parts expense and knuckle skin.

Can the 280Z 5 speed kit work in the early car without bashing heck out of the inside of the tunnel for clearance?

I just redid my '63 Midget ribcage trans replacing all bearings, syncronizers, etc...keeping all the original gears & shafts...around $100-$150 in parts!
 
Wow Tony! Thats way cheap. Where did you source parts from for this?
I'd actually like to keep this one original.

Ah, well that makes sense. Perhaps I should pay more attention to the signatures!

The other box is about half an hour away. Once I get it here and apart I'm sure we'll be speaking on the phone.
 
Replace the layshaft and bearings and the synchros - fourth is sometimes OK, but do you really want to go in there again....

Buy the parts from Tony :smile:

BTW, the last year of non-synch is better - larger diameter layshaft and caged bearings (4, instead of 3) but the early ones are OK for street use.
