Anyone have any hot ideas of how to keep the spring loaded brushes out of the way so I can slide the armature back into the case and get the unit assembled? I have rebuilt many a starter and generator as a young man but I don't remember this kind of a problem.

"Hep Hep Me" he cried!

Thanks, Tinkerman

I think one can pull the brushes out a little so that the springs push on their sides to hold them back.

If it's a window type starter (has a band around where the brushes go), leave the brushes out of the holder, assemble the starter and insert the brushes last. Just pull back the spring with a small hook, insert the brush, and let the spring go.

I've done MANY that way. A little fiddly, but works. I found a 90 degree pick helps.

Actually I used both methods. The two that were attached to the end cap I pulled up and let the spring hold them. The two that attach to the field coils I pulled out the window and once it was all snugged up with the screws I pulled the springs out with a hook and put them in. Just happened to have a little hook. I then took it all apart because I had forgotten to grease the end bearing. aaaarrrrggghhh

All done now. Will post a before and after picture,

Thanks for your help!
