Rear view mirror location for BJ8

Hello All. I would like to know the correct location (if there is one) for the fender mount side/rear view mirrors. I am planning on using the standard type mirrors that kick out towards the side of the car and not the bullet type. This will be on a BJ8. Thanks.

Im not sure if there is a "correct" location for the mirrors . I have seen them mounted all over the place from way down towards the headlight to right up by the windsheild post and everywhere in between .
Someone else may correct me but I believe mirrors were added at the dealership so it was up to the customer/guy that put them on as to where they were mounted .
Having said that both my BJ8s have very similar wing mirror positions , midway down the front wing . Check the pics in my album .

I think,BJ8Tony, you will find the mirror locarion on the wings coincudes with the accesibity to their retainer fasteners on the underside of the wing.

Mirrors were also added by the factory on the request of the buyer.

From my experience, the right side mirror mounting should be established first so that it is in a location where you don't have to look around the interior rear view mirror to see it. I have also found that the convex-lensed mirrors work the best for me.

Make a circle with your thumb and forefinger. Bring it from arms length to about 4 inches from one eye. You will see that the field will get larger as the fingers get closer. Therefore, you want the mirrors as close to the driver as possible to get the widest view. Some mount them on the door for max visibility. The bullet type set at 22 inches from the windscreen. I also used the convex for even more wide angle. My MGB had one mirror close on the drivers side and one over the wheel on the passenger side. The wheel one was practically worthless (to me) except when parking.
That is why there are 31 flavors of ice cream. We don't all like vanilla.

I too believe it was dealer or owner installed.
Over the knock-on, over the chrome flash, between the flash and the windscreen or on the door.
I read somewhere that the most common place was on the wings, straight up from the knock-on.

Measure twice cut once. Make sure that when deciding where to place it on the passenger wing, that the dash mirror does not restrict the view.

Measure twice cut once. that is exactly the reason that I ask!!

Just a heads up Tony. The standard type (Lucas?) mirrors have a stem with the round mirror on top. If one bumps the mirror, it needs to be adjusted.
The bullet type, bump them all you want, the mirror does not move. Just one of those thing people say, oh I never thought about that, or I knew that going in.

The choice of external mirrors is, for the most part, a question of personal preference as it was, as others have stated, a dealer or owner installation. Placement of the Lucas fender mirrors, as I understand, is at the top of the fender, just outside of the fender bead to allow the foot a small separation, at the point where the inner fender ends.

The Lucas fender mirrors were considered the traditional choice in 1964 and my selection for my new BJ8P1. However, actually using the far mounted Lucas fender mirrors was out of the question until my early 50s when my nearsightedness transitioned toward being more farsighted that the mirrors started to become even mildly useful.

Over the years, many have installed door mirrors and some have chosen closer fender mounted bullets. Although I do like the look of my Lucas fender mirrors best, I feel that they are impractical for anyone actually using them as a driving assist.

Good luck,
Ray (64BJ8P1)

Tony, there is a company still in the business from the sixties that still sells the original "spring back Mirror" that where used on many British cars. Just a option you may want to consider. Check out Texautomotive.com. Or look at the British car forums article section.

As Ray pointed out, the location being on the outside of the fender bead.
My dad had a 64BJ8 back in 65 thru 74. I have photos of it having bullets, outside of the fender bead, straight over the knock-ons. I think a lot of cars had the bullet style. The 66 Shelby GT350 Mustang had bullet mirrors. Shelby did a nice job upgrading that car.

Andrea, you have a private message.
