How many inches higher did the later model rubber bumper mgs sit than the 60s chrome ones? Will the leaf springs swap also?

The Rubber Bumper B’s ride height was raised 1.5” in order to comply with US DOT mandated safety requirements.

According to the information that I have (ref. Jonathan Edward’s MGB and MGC) this was done using a “MGB V8 type Cross-member (padded?)”, a new set of “coil springs” and in the rear they used “longer leaf-spring hangers”. Initially this meant the removal of the front sway bar on the Roadsters (not the GTs) and some modifications to the rear damper (lever shocks) and their links. I don’t know for sure if the rear springs are interchangeable, but from what I understand - the leaf springs for older B’s only had 6 leafs while the newer RB springs had 7 leafs. Mater-a-fact all of the part’s catalogs have two separate part numbers for each. Perhaps someone else can comment further on this.

Anyway sway-bars didn’t re-appear again until the 77 model year. But in addition to the front sway-bar to help compensate for the raised ride height a rear sway-bar was added too. This was something totally new and is IMHO a real benefit should you decide to lower you’re Rubber Bumper B.

That said - I am sure other members of our forum might disagree with me on this. But I’m not so sure swapping springs from an even older car onto a newer (old) car is all that wise of a thing to do. If you really want to lower you’re MGB (I assume that’s why you are asking these questions). There are plenty of cheap aftermarket NEW suspension upgrades you can go with to get the job done right. These have already been engineered with lowering the RB Bs and would seem to take a lot of the guess work out of the process. I advise you check out the Moss & Victoria British catalogs before you commit yourself – the prices ain’t that bad.

Good Luck!
