Rear suspension

Is there any significant difference in handling, maintenance, parts supply between the quarter eliptical and semi-eliptical suspensions on Spridgets? Are they relatively interchangeable, meaning bolt on rather than weld on? Which is prefered and why? Thanks, Bob

They're not easy to interchange without pretty major work.
I've owned both and raced both and I haven't noticed a huge difference, but most folks seem to think the 1/4 elliptic cars handle slightly better.

Bob, The suspensions are not interchangeable. There is quite a bit of structural difference in the underbody between the two types, as well as differences in the axle housings.
I've always thought that the 1/4 elliptic felt "tighter" than the 1/2 did.
There are plenty of aftermarket parts out there to make either of them handle well. Panhard bars, watts links, etc.
Just what are you aiming for? Are you planning on racing? If so, some rules require stock suspension, others are more open.

Actually I'm getting a little bored with my trouble free MGB. I can't find a big Healey or Tiger that fits my spending plan and since I've never owned a Spridget thought it might be a nice diversion. Bugeyes are out of sight for what they're worth (IMHO) so thought I'd look around for a "box" sprite/midget. At this point I'd like a round wheel arch Midget, probably a '72 with a 1275 and wire wheels BUT if somebody was dumping a bugeye with a 1275/disc brake conversion/wire wheel/ rib case tranny I'd probably snap it up. Am I a dreamer??? The reason for the original question on suspension was to see if one or the other was significantly worse. If that was the case I would tailor my search around the better of the two. Bob
