rear suspension rebuild

Here is where I'm at in the pocesss on my '70 MGB GT. Have removed the enitre rear spring assembly including the shocks. Have all the new replacement parts and am ready to re-install. So far so good. . . Now the challenge. The bolt holes for the front spring mounts on the underside of the body have elongated due to the bolt seizing onto the bushing in the spring. So, I can not install the new srings yet. Here's the question, do I weld a plate the size of the spring mount, on both sides, inside and out, or do you think a washer about 1.5" in diameter of appropriate thickness welded instead would be sturdy enough? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. And, thanks in advance.

Hello Steve,
I'm afraid that I do not agree with Gary, it will be impossible to stop further movement and wear just by tightening, or even overtightening the securing bolts. I believe that welding a thick washer either side of the shackle will be a permanent fix.
Ideally use a tube spacer inside the shackle and a bolt through with the washers in place outside to align them before welding. (You could use an old bush) This should help to ensure that the two washers line up square and true.

Alec,
I must also agree with you. I think after a while of driving the front bush would start to move and ruin the bush. The tube idea is great, I was wondering how to square up the holes. I was going to rely on the welder to figure that out. Thanks to both for the advice.

Well there you go!! It will be easy to weld it!! Just put a plate over it and re-drill it, or cut it off and refabricate a new one!! GOOD LUCK!!
