It appears that my clunking may be due to a missing or worn bump stop. When we installed the Goodparts spacer, it increased the spring travel. My expert friend has a couple of new bump stops and will put them in next week. Due to physical issues, I can no longer lift things like a wheel and tire so I have to rely on younger, stronger backs to do the heavy lifting. I'm good at analyzing and supervising though...
 
Have your friend check the shock mounting bolts, they need to be very tight. If they are loose even slight bumps can produce very worrisome clunking.

My clunk sounded like I left something loose when I redid the rear. Although the shocks felt fine, one had about an eighth inch of side play that did it. Drove me crazy.
 
I have the TRF tube shock conversion. Done many years ago. No problems so far - I think. We'll find out next weekend.
