rear quarterpanel repair section welding

I'm preparing to replace the rusted lower portions of both rear quarter panels on my MK III GT6 with repair panels from Rimmer Bros. When installing the repair panel on the rear section of the quarter panel, should it be attached to the panel with a lap or butt weld?

Butt weld will generally give better results. Main problem with lap is it leaves a thicker stripe of metal that can be very hard to hide. Of course, the butt weld will be harder to do and the fit must be much closer too.
 
Have one quarter in place and butt welded it. took many passes and patience, but I now have a nice, continuous weld and very little warping.

Glad your job is coming along. I thought I'd mention that when I did some sheet metal replacing, I borrowed a type of crimping tool from a friend of mine. You slide it along the cut and squeeze the handles and it puts a z type bend on the edge the thickness of the new piece. The new piece lays on top of the detent and creates a small backing surface that actually strengthens the welded joint. No lumps, waves or raised surfaces. Don't remember the name of the tool, but it works very well. PJ

The only thing wrong with a flanged type weld repair is there is a place for moisture to accumulate in the lap of the flange. Where as a but weld can be somewhat harder to accomplish it can be completely sealed if there is access to the reverse side of the repair.
