TR6 Rear Oil Seal?

Upon draining the engine oil on a TR6, a spring measuring about 9" long came out the sump drain hole. The spring is tapered on one end and fits into the other end. Is it possible for the spring in the rear oil seal to break loose and drop into the oil pan? The engine was recently rebuilt.

If it's about 1/8 inch across, that is the only thing in there it could be. Possible it was done on installation. Not centered when pushed over the crank end.
