rear oil seal leaking

I have a leak on the drivers side. I know the parts are not expensive, the seal and paper gasket are all I need (probably new brake shoes while I am there). How hard is it to do this repair.? Do I need to pull the bearing (press fit I believe) ?? Looking at the shop manual it looks like I pull the axle and change the parts from the inboard side, leaving the bearing alone. Is this correct? How difficult is it to pull the axle? Is it necessary to make sure the axle goes back in the same position? Lots of questions, but I have never tackled this before. Thanks.
 
This will be about the easiest job you get to do. Sit down enjoy, the hard part is takeing the wheel off.

Remove wheel.
Remove drum.
Remove shoes.
Pull axle.
Replace seal and gasket.

Reverse.

Take a picture of the brakes before you remove them. They can be frustrating the first time you have to reinstall them.
 
The seals aren't hard to do. One thing that was suggested to me and seems to help is to use some gasket compound on the paper. I was told to use Hylomar, but Permatex #2 seems to work fine too. A tip: Hold off on replacing the brakes until you're sure the leak stopped.
 
Thanks for the tip re the brakes. I have some gasket compound as well so that will be used too.
 
There is a weep hole on the back plate that allows excess oil to excape. More times than not it is pluged up with dirt and grease. Also I have had to put speedy sleeves on the inner sear surface on the axel housing to get the seal to stop leaking.
 
Have never used a speedy seal but they look like real life savers.
 
Ok Ive done a bit or research on speedy sleeves, but would not know what to order or from who in Canada, or the States. If the seals are as easy as Im told to repair, should I try without the speedy seal and if it continues then order. I am curious about the cots of these
 
If a visual/tactile inspection of the sealing surfce on the axle shows no significant wear then you should try to replace the seal/oring/gasket. If it still leaks, then it may be time to look for a sleeve. Your local bearing supplier or machine shop most likely has them.
 
Have I not seen them in the Moss catalog as well?
 
yup for timing cover and diff , not for axles that I can find anyway
