Rear leaf swap.

Granted I had a rear leaf and bushings, how quick can i get the rear swap done? I can't find much about this on the net and dont have a manual. From what I could find it looks like it has to be unbolted from the chunk. Something about removing the gas tank and accessing a panel to get into the bolts? Now when I remove this thing with the suspension be ok completely unloaded? Any info would help me. Thanks.

just swapping the rear spring isnt too bad, on the rear shelf behind the drivers seat right under the gas tank is an access panel. remove that and unbolt the spring - with the rear end in the air or else you would be in for a nasty suprise. unbolt from the rear uprights and it should slide out from the side of the car. not a big deal. to get it back together i used to have to jack up the axles to work them into place, it was a little bit of a pain but not hugely difficult.

Do i have to move the petrol tank to get to the access hole?

I don't think so, just remove the panel behind the seats and take a look.

cool thanks so much for the tips!

- I did mine over the winter...you may have 4 studs instead of 6.

- Not a lot of room to work but you don't need to remove the tank. As tr6lover said....don't forget to get the back wheels off the ground. Removing the seats would make it easier...I didn't and it's a killer on the back leaning into undo/fasten the studs.

One other suggestion: after putting the rear end on jack stands and removing the wheels, unbolt the shock absorbers from the vertical link before removing the spring bolt. That way, the vertical link/axle assembly can drop well down out of the way. I tried to rush this job on my Herald a couple years back and didn't undo the shocks. When I unbolted the spring from the vertical link, the spring end quickly...uh...SPRANG down and crushed the end of the brake hose going into the wheel cylinder (almost took a finger with it). Possibly the swing-spring doesn't have the same kind of stored energy, but for the extra five minutes' time, it's worth it!

Ah thanks for that extra suggestion. I hadn't even thought of that, but I can see it happening in my head!
