Rear Hub Seal

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gifAbout 6 weeks ago (or 500 miles)I rebuilt the rear hub do to an oil leak. I used two paper gaskets and blue RTV sealer on all sides. The RTV is leaking onto the outside of the break drum. Could I have used too much RTV? Should I remove one of the gaskets (replace) or re-tighten the five bolts to greater torque (torqued properly at 55 lb when job done). Is there a better sealer for this application? Can I use form-a-gasket instead for the paper? Thanks

TH Maybe doubling up on the gaskets is what caused the problem .Plus I think if you use RTV it should be used

sparingly and be the Red/Orange Hi Temp material.-FWIW---Keoke

I did a rear seal and hub bearing three weeks ago and have no leaks. One gasket covered with old fashioned Permatex gasket sealer.

When I installed new hub gaskets I did not use any type of sealer and had no problems.

Just to add to the confusion...

Three seals, two on the BJ8 an one on the A30, two plus years ago, one gasket each, no sealer other than the gasket, no leaks. IMHO, if everything is clean and has no damage, there is no need for that rtvlomar, blue, red, green sealer mumbo-jumbo stuff.

If the blue stuff is really RTV, it should have cured long ago. Is it hard? If so, just trim off the excess.

Couple nice things about using the hylomar on gaskets, especially thin paper ones like the ones for the hub and the differential cover. When you apply it to the gasket and to the mating surface the gasket will stick and hold in place ... (nothing worse than tearing the gasket during assembly) Also, when it comes time for taking it apart again (sometimes sooner ... sometimes later /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif the gasket is usually in perfect condition and can be removed if needed and reused.

The blue c--p is still tacky. Could it be cleaned off with paint thinner? But, on the other hand, there is no oil leak.

Yes, there is an o-ring that needs to be in top condition to get the correct seal. I always place some grease on the o-ring to help seat and avoid twisting.
