Rear Hub Re-assembly

Hi Guys!

Quick question. I removed the hubs from our bn7 due to some diff fluid leaking through. On reassembly, do the hubs get knocked on so theres no play from the backing plate? Meaning, will the hub with the bearing in it need to get hammered home till shes butted and doesnt move off the dust plate? i feel like i've seated the bearing all the way she will go, but when i then pull against the hub, theres a bit of play. I can grab the hub and pull forward and she comes, a touch, maybe an 1/th inch, and the can push back and she will hit the backing plate.

Is this correct of is there more to go to seat the bearing? Manual isnt clear...
 
I'm not clear on your description, but the hub is held in place by the octagon nut, which should be tightened to ~100 to 120 lb-ft. Then one side of the lock washer is bent forward to lock that big nut. That will fix the inner bearing race. The bearing can have a wee bit of play in it, but the spacer (#61 on the Moss drawing, https://mossmotors.com/austin-heale...rain/differential-axles/rear-axle-hypoid-type) should clamp the outer race. The o-ring provides the oil seal between the hub and axle flange. The gasket, #48, is sometimes too thick to permit proper clamping of the outer bearing race. (BTW, you did apply the bearing grease to the bearing, right?) When you insert the half-shaft and tighten the nuts, it shouldn't wobble.
 
Keep in mind one of the octagon nuts has a left-hand thread.

If there's play when you've tightened the octagon nut, maybe the bearing is sliding a little in the hub. If you either omit the gasket or make one out of copier paper (.003" thick) you should be OK. If you use the Moss gasket (.015" thick), you'll have a fair chance of spinning a bearing. With the thinner paper or no gasket at all, the bearing is properly clamped when the axle is bolted up to the studs.

Your wheel bearing may have 'spun' the hub.
This would lead to seal failure.
These problems may have been caused by a previous repair that placed a paper gasket that was too thick.
I had the same problem and found a product called bearing mount to hold the bearing in my spun hub. I used RTV silicone instead of the paper gasket this time.
You may need to replace the brake shoes if they got saturated with oil.
