Rear-end problems

Besides a little sagging and some age...mine is really OK. But, my 94 XJ6 has noise and slight vibration when I let off a little...all above 40mph. I think it is the left seal and bearing (I believe there is a bearing on each side ?). Has anyone had any experience with this ? Should a home garage even tackle such a problem ? Would one consider a reputable transmission repair facility ? or ... may parliment help me, last resort... The Jaguar Dealer and re-finance my house and first two children ?

This model has an output shaft on each side of the dif. The shafts are fairly easy to remove. but first be sure that this is the problem. Is the rear axle just noisey or is there any play. jack your car up and move the wheel side to side and up and down. if there is play in all directions this is a hub baring problem. if the play is only side to side then the trunyun baring is at fault (where the hub upright bolts to the lower arm alowing the hub to stay vertical when the ride hight changes) if the play is up and down only then this is a problem with output shaft on the dif. unfortunatlly the 40 and 300 shape xj6 suffer from all three of these. the output shaft is easy to remove, unbolt the drive shaft from the output shaft (4x11/16 bolts) between the drive shaft and the output shaft are some shim spacers count these and make shure you put them all back, now you should be able to see more 11/16 bolts (5 I think) these are only accessable as you rotate the shaft. now with a bit of gentle persuasion the outout shaft should come out (may be a bit tight as it has been there some time.
Hope this helps and sorry if i told you anything you already know. Tell me how you get on.....

Regarding your noise and vibration above 40 mph, when the bearings give up on either the differential outputs or the carrier hubs at the ends of the half axles, they usually give a roar all the time, and the pitch and intensity change with road speed. The vibration is very unusal however. Is the noise a clunk or a roar that occurs when you let of of acceleration? If it is a clunk it is probably a U joint. If it is a roar only when you let off or accelerate, it probably is a part in the differential like a ring or planetary gear. As a rule the output and carrier hub bearings sound off all the time, even at low speeds. As previously offered, hubbearing play can also help you point to the problem but may usually have a small amount of play after 100K miles. This is not correct but is usually the case. Bearing replacement in either the differential or the hubbearings require machine pressing and require setting some preload while installing. Make sure you use a qualified garage. Best regards,

The noise is all the time...just more so at 40+ than at lower speeds. No clunk and no real vibration... but an occasional vibration noise. The replacement of gear oil did nothing to the noise and there is a considerable amount of fresh oil under the differential on the left side...thrown out near the seal. I doubt if it should be attempted by a shade tree mechanic, even one with 30 years of British cars. I was just wishing that I could do it.
I am a major glutten for abuse and frustration.

Steven, Sounds like your output shaft bearings have gone bad in your differential. You have a couple of options. You can replace the bearings with the differential in place or you can exchange differentials with a reconditioned unit. The first option is challenging and you should have a shop manual to guide you through this. The exchange option is a lot easier and probably can be done without detailed instructions. Very good reconditioned units are available from Coventry West in Atlanta and the exchange costs with shipping and handling are probably less than $1K. An exchange unit takes all guess work out such as overlooking some deffective part. Good luck
