Rear End Howl solved

I have experienced a loud howl from the rear end of my BJ8
during deceleration. I had the car put up on a rack and the
drive shaft removed. I found that the big nut that tightens the pinion in the rear end was about 3 turns loose. It still had the lock washer on it. When the nut was tightened
down the howl went away and it is now quiet. I hope that this will help out anyone else experiencing this problem.

Thanks for the info. I hope that the next person with this problem checks the nut first. Maybe someone replaced the pinion seal & didn't tighten the nut fully. Something like 140 ft lbs.

There are also some thin spacer shims behind the front pinion bearing, used for setting pinion bearing preload, that can break up & release the tension on the nut. There is a slight chance that this has happened. If so, the preload would be too great & the pinion shaft hard to turn after the nut was tightened. If the driveshaft & pinion shaft still turn easily by hand, This is not a problem. You got off very lucky.
