I just use a 3/8" ratchet.....it seems to fit in the hole good enough to loosen it up. I know it isn't the "proper" tool to use, but it works for me.

A good crescent wrench would probably do just as well.
 
I used a 3/8 ratchet also, but what is the proper tool? PO used pliers so the threads have some nice chewed up areas.
 
Have always used a 3/8 rachet.
 
Someone on one of the lists made up a tool consisting of a piece of foot long 1" steel water pipe, 90 degree angle, and then a access plug with a stud on the end. He ground down the 1/2" stud on the corners and it fit the rear plug exactly. The 3/8" ratchet doesn't really fit on Bugsy and I need to make one of these tools up to tighten a leaky lower plug on Bugsy.
 
Bah, just put some teflon tape on the plug and put it in with a 3/8 drive. Old threds get loose.
 
The proper tool is a 7/16 square. i made one from a 1/2 extension.

Hardware stores will carry a small piece of 1/2" bar in the nuts and bolts section for about $2. Grind it down a bit and your good to go.
 
Just got new plugs from Moss. These are the npt plugs with the allen head. Of course, I don't have an allen wrench big enough, so it's back to Sears.
 
I got the Moss plugs too and have the allen key - the plug seems to go about 1/2 way in and then binds - i can slowly move it along but am a little confused since it sure seems to fit properly to start - anyone else have this experience
 
If I recall, its a pipe thread and BETTER get tight halfway in or something is wrong. Ditto on the teflon tape. Works great.
