rear bearing kit or seals

Last night while the garage was reinstalling my rear wheels (new tires installed) The drives side rear brake area was pretty messy, grease/oil not brake fluid. I assume the seal is gone. Is this a big deal to change or should I buy the bearing kit and do the bearing at the same time ? In either case is it bearing grease or some other lubricant that gets packed in there??
 
The seals are notorious for leaking, but if it is an old bearing then I would replace it. The bearing is a 6207 and the seal is a 472164 (Timken #'s). You should be able to pick them up at a local bearing shop. The job isn't too bad, but you will need to pull the hub off and press out the old bearing and in the new.
 
Stop, don't do nothing yet.

Rear bearings rairly ever wear out they are lubed by the oil in the rear end out through the axel shafts or what ever.

There are only two things, gaskets, that can be replaced. one is a paper thin gasket and the other is an o ring. Both cheeep cheep, get a few extras. Oh a tube of permagasket #2 is always helpful.

Check your Haynes or the Moss break away pic to see how it works and where they go.

This is easy stuff Woodie, you can do it with no problems. Maybe an hour each side, at least the first time.
 
You need the thin gasket and O-ring. Bearings are pretty cheap, so you may want to go ahead and do them at the same time just to save doing them later. However, my rear bearings are going on 80,000 miles and still seem good. They are lubricate by the lube in the rear end. However, when reinstalled mine, I lightly packed mine in bearing grease to keep them from being dry until the lube gets sloshed out there.

Ok I looked at the break away in the shop manual, When I pull the axle, If I do not replace the bearing, there is a gasket, the seal and an o ring. These can all be replaced (less than $10) without pulling the bearing ? And how long can I drive till I fix this, it just started to leak. I need to order the paper gasket, I will look locally for the seal and o ring. Does any body know the timken number for the o ring or the size so I can buy locally
 
Oh heck have Tony get the parts through Moss.

You can drive forever like you are, the rear brakes just slowly go away. Might wish to have new brakes while you are in there.

BTW, I agree with all the above, changing the seals is simple, also check that the rear drums did not get damaged from the leak.
 
When I redid the rear end in my car about 3 weeks ago I bought a bearing kit from moss with the gasket, o ring, washer and bearing. Then I found out that you really need a specialized bearing puller to get the dang thing out. I ended up just replacing the o ring and seal.

The whole job should cost you less than 20 bucks (including 2 things of synthetic gear oil) and take less than an hour (including 35 minutes to refill the diff).

Been out in the garage at least 6 times today so far. Polished three, yep three dash pots. All came up about the same. The problem is that they all are old. Well what did I expect. and the small and some larger pits from the alum setting around so long do not smooth out although they are well polished even in the bottoms. Guess they are as good as they are going to get.
