Rear axle seals????

One of my rear axle seals is leaking. How big a job is it to replace seals? Should I replace bearing also??

If so, it's not terribly difficult, but he will need a press & a home-made tool to hold the flanges while turning the nuts.

I'd reuse the bearings, only if I couldn't find any evidence that they were damaged or worn.
 
Is it the same procedure to change the seals in the TR3? is the big 50 ton press that I've read about in previous posts required to remove the hub and change the seal?

Not the same. Doing just the differential seals (the ones that hold back the gear oil) on a 3 doesn't require a press at all (although you will need that bar to hold the input flange).

Where the hard part comes on a later TR3 through solid axle TR4A is removing the hubs from the axle shafts, which is required only to replace the wheel bearings or the outer grease seals. And IMO using a press for that is very likely to ruin the hub. IMO you have to either build (or buy) the special tool, or else ship the axles off to someone who has the tool. I don't know if HVDA will still do it; but I'm pretty sure John Esposito or Ted Schumacher will. (No doubt lots of other LBC shops have the tool as well.)

But I wouldn't bother replacing those outer seals, until the bearing is going bad. In my experience, they don't leak unless you over-grease the wheel bearing (and even new seals will probably leak if you do).
