Rear Axle oil breather

Hi guys

Over this side of the pond, the rear axle oil breather appears to be a two part item looking a bit like a mushroom in a nylon/ polythene type material screwed into the axle casing. Since I bought the car, ( it came with a snapped off section left in ) I have put two breathers on, as I keep loosing the top section, I should have looked how they fit together. Has any one else experienced the problem.
I have seen a race car with a breather tube fitted leading into an old castrol can ( possibly ex break fluid judging by its size ) but a period item in keeping with the car, fitted on to the kick board just in from the wheel arch.

Hi Bob, I have not had that experience with the breather cap. Maybe you just got hold of some doggy parts.

Are you sure that the tube set up you saw was not an Oil Tube?-- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif---Keoke

On the racers I worked on we were required to have a catch-can on all fluid breathers to stop overflow from getting on the track.

When you think of it, that makes perfect sense, I visited Rawles ( a Healey specialist ) over here in Hampshire this weekend, on one of there open days and there was a racer in for work and the engine oil breather was treated the same way - into a can. I have ordered a couple more - he was out of stock, and try and figure out what keeps going wrong and see if there is a fix. They are cheap enough, but just a pain in the rear when they keep coming apart.

Hi Bob,
Is this the part you are referring to? I believe mine is original. I haven’t had it off so I don’t know what lies beneath. Just a wild idea though, could a crank case breather be used? Here is a link to some that K&N sell, though I’ve seen generic ones at auto chain stores.

Thats the gizzmo alright, but the replacement ones over here are of plastic and it seams that the top section is clipped on. The replacements that I have ordered will be available shortly, so I will go from there. Is your item made of metal?
