Real TR6 Update

Well, I am at 2 grand for Lucas PI parts. Doing it the right way should cost a little less than 2.5 grand. Also, if anyone is thinking of doing it, I have done all the "legwork", and know who has what. I know, it will be terrible, unreliable, etc. We will see. I am being told there may only be a dozen, give or take of these in the US. The night before I start the installation, I will stay in a Holiday Inn. With the Lucas PI, and the rest of the package, I should be able to outrun a Lexus 400 with no problem.

Re: Real TR6 Update

That seller in the past has always sold me superior parts, an excellent person to do business with. We have had several dealing in the past, always top notch. However, everyone in the UK I have talked to, told me not to evern bother with a Lucas pump, so, I decided to deal with the Bosch pump issues, rather than the Lucas unrealiablily. Also, with that metering unit, one would have to have it calibrated to their engine, unless it just happens to be the one for your particular set up, I dont' know which one it is. Also, the experts in the UK say I need unleaded seals, however, some people say I don't. Those seals in the NOS unit are most likely over 30 yrs. old, I would think they are dried out. The NOS units on UK ebay don't seem to bring alot of money. However, with the NOS, you don't have any rotor wear, which is a very good thing. I purchased the major parts from NZ. The MU was supposed to have come from a running car. That may have been true, but, how long ago? All the rubber parts in it are shot, both diaphams rotten, so, it was only good as an exchange core. The MU was decribed by 2 UK experts as a "bastard" unit, as it had the early undesirable one piece piston in it, and the newer screw on return fitting. The linkage is wrong for a TR6, also incomplete, as is the air filter assembly. The throttle bodies are what I would call very good. So, basically I paid 750 bucks for 3 throttle bodies, Plenum with dent, a fuel pressure regulator, and a Metering Unit core, and Pedestal w/gear, as the other parts are not the right ones/incomplete for a TR6. I think I paid to much, but that's my opinion.

Re: Real TR6 Update

Thanks for keeping us informed about your PI project. Please try to include a few photos, too, if you can.

This is a somewhat rare occurrence, not too many folks on this side of the pond have done it, especially with good documentation. A lot of work, money, research is needed, and a lot of mechanical know-how.

Gotta have some photos, Searcherman. Post em up, and keep letting us know how it goes.

Very interesting . . . :yesnod:

Re: Real TR6 Update

Searcherman,

I am interested in what you are going to use for an exhaust manifold? I can not get the plenum support bracket to fit around my headers, so its either a stock one or a Phoenix from the UK for about 600 bucks! I would like to see a picture of what you have done when you are finished. Good idea going with the Bosch, easy to find parts, and reliable. The Lucas, if kept in good order, can be ok, but it is a modified windsheild washer motor................they used what they had on hand at the time.

Re: Real TR6 Update

Well, I am not sure how much information you have. I am going stock based on Kasner's and just about everyone else's dyno tests showing there is little to be gained with anything else. And, if I remeber right, the only one to use is a 6-2-1, for maybe a slight gain, with a larger single pipe. Where did you get the plenum/manifold connectors? I have been told the quality on the new is not good, but in your pic, they look very good. I also used the wrinkle paint, which I believe was factory. Nice work, I will post pics as soon as I get a few more parts in.

Re: Real TR6 Update

The received wisdom by most people in the UK is that there is little or no improvements to be had by fitting a 6-2-1 exhaust header. A 6-3-1 header returns much more. Don't just take my word for it, have a look at this blog, where a number of different headers have been fitted on the same car and dyno tests run.

It may also be worth mentioning that if you do fit a after market header, you may need to change the throttle linkages to clear it.

Re: Real TR6 Update

Thanks for the info and pics guys. Right now I am more concerned with getting the support bracket from the bottom of the plenum to the motor mount to fit correctly. No way its going to work with the header that came with the car.
I have picked up a couple of PI sets over the years, and i think i just took the best plenum connectors and washed them with dish soap and then a bit of Armourall.
Where did you get your MU overhauled? Prestige?

Re: Real TR6 Update

Yes to you on the MU Heliguy. And Spitbang, I said if my memory serves me right about which header was best. I think I will stick with Kasners results, and at least 1 person in the forum has had some type of header on the dyno. They have not tried them all I don't suspect, but, the same number comes up, 4 HP over stock. I would suspect the more modifications one does, the more you will get from a header. I am just doing a standard CP engine.
