re-using certain internals and other Questions

hey guys...
other than the "new is better than old" point of view, is there any reason why i shouldn't re-use the rocker arms and adjusters if all looks well?

is an etching primer necessary/advisable for aluminum parts to get the color to stick better?

is there any harm to rebuilding the motor now and having it sit for a few years while the frame is restored?

thanks
Tim

Hi Tim,

The rocker arms can be rebuilt which should be as good as new (or perhaps better since the manufacturing of new parts for old cars is sometimes suspect but I have no knowledge of brand new rocker arm assembliesbeing currently manufactured). A popular rebuild source is Rocker Arm Specialist. Here's another thread with info about them:

Bare aluminum oxidizes almost immediately so you want to use a primer designed espressly for adhering to it. Lots of good info on preparing/priming aluminum on home built aircraft forums.

I don't think it's a good idea to rebuild a motor and have it sit. Better to wait until you are ready to drop it in the car and run it.

timbn2, you can purchase a complete original type rocker assy. fully assembled ready to bolt in from sports and classics in stamford ct, ive seen them but i do not know of their quality, price, or country of origin , you can call to find out (203) 655-8731 talk to steve or john.

Hi Tim, if you are in the process of rebuilding the engine or just doing a valve job, then the rocker assembly should be given the same consideration as the other engine parts. OTOH, it is not necessary to purchase new. The reference John provided is recommended to refurbish the shaft assembly--Fwiw--Keoke
