Re-motivation...and an MG is Born

Hi...haven't been around here in a while, have I? I've kinda let myself get away from the boards and MGs over the last little while. I'm getting back into it though.

Over the last while, my enthusiasm for cars and MGs has faded a bit. The pictures of the parts and cars didn't quite pique me like they used to, and work on either my MG or my S10 had me feeling a little bit "eh". (I know 'eh' isn't a noun, but it seems to describe how I felt anyway.)

About a month ago, I broke down and ordered up a copy of 'An MG is Born', and pretty much forgot about it a week later. Two days ago, it arrived and I popped it into the DVD player. I ended up glued to the TV for all 10 episodes in a marathon, watching it go from a rusty gold '73 to a silver shining example of a B. It brought the motivation and interest back, as I saw in action how fun it is to work on MGs and drive them. Among other things, it showed to me what my B could become with some work.

First stop is to do some rust repair. The two spots I've found rust are the floorboards, and a spot in the engine bay under the MC. The PO replaced the MC about a year before I bought it, due to leaks. The brake fluid ate the paint, and the area subsequently started to corrode. I'm going to tackle the interior first and fix it up, as the engine bay is a bit more demanding of a project.

The plan is to pull the interior pieces, strip the inside of the tub and lay on some coatings of Rust Bullet; ironically, the color of the automotive grade matches my B's silver fairly closely, so I doubt a top coat will be necessary. A new black carpet kit is on it's way too; it'll look like new money when it's done. I don't think I'll be doing red leather anytime soon. Bit too rich for me at the moment. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Without putting the cart too far in front of the horse, the next plan will be to revamp the engine bay. It's in a pretty sad looking state; definitely needs some cleaning, painting and cosmetic work. That's for another time though. I'm back in the game now.

Welcome back, Josh...sometimes you just have to get away from it for a bit!

Welcome back to the fold, Josh.
I know exactly how you feel. I put a restoration on complete hold when I was nearly finished because I just flat lost my motivation and enthusiasm. Hopefully I will, as you have, regain my sanity shortly and get back at it.

Start off slow and accomplish a few things. Stand back and pat yourself on the back for motivation. Every little thing you do is another notch towards your end result & happiness.

When the Packers were part way through their championship run a few years ago coach Holmgren used to tell the boys to "enjoy the journey" and not worry about the end objective.

Lot to be said for that in restoring cars!!

Gentlemen,

Good day.

I have been working on my '57 A frame off for over three years. A project that has been done in spurts... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

The only way that I have been able to get re-motivated is thanks to my '66 MGB... A driver that really needs a restoration. Just driving the darn thing gets me excited again....When I stop at a light and people wave, or smile, or a little kid smiles at me and gives a thumbs up shouting 'cool car mister' adds to the joy of driving...And the B is bent, rusted, and various shades of black and grey.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif

These are great classic cars that appeal to all ages and genders. Keeping them on the road is a noble venture.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

JoshP.. Welcome back... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif
