Anybody remember the Comet Speed-O-Matic model kits from WW II? They were pre-cut - just the thing for impatient, sloppy kids like me. I never had the patience to build model airplanes from plans. I did build a B-17 and a P-40. Also had a Thimble Drome racer with an Arden .199 engine. Metal race car. Went fast too on a control line. RC models weren't around yet. Free Flight models were neat but frequently ended up several miles from where they were launched. You could fly control line planes but you got dizzy wheeling around and around. There were even model jet engines, outlawed in many communities because of noise. The Dyna Jet was one. Started with a tire pump as I recall. Finally, to save our fingers from backfiring propellers, we had a windup Starter made by the Streed Electric Co. of Minneapolis, I believe. Wind it up, press it against the prop, press a button and the thing would spin the prop. When it started, the little arms would fold out of the way as they were spring loaded. Ingenious. I wonder if any are around today? I'll check it out.
