Ray's McCaleb's "The Spridget Project" motor build

Well Ray's enigine build is well under way. The block is prepped and ready for the assmebly room. It was Gylptal caoted inside, and painted BMC olive on the exterior. It's has been bored .040" over to it's new AE 21253 high compression psitons. The factory brass oil galley plugs were removed prior to caustic washing, and tapped for NPT pipe plugs.

Here's all Ray's goodies, still got to get a few more items, but most of the parts are here.

This build is alot like Drews motor with a few more goodies thrown at it.
Here's a run dwon of the build.
.040" over AE21253 pistons
Std/Std. EN16T crankshaft
King Tri metal bearings
Payen gaskets
Ported and polished cylinder head, with hardened exhaust seats.
Harland Sharp 1.3 roller rocker arms w/solid spacers
APT VP276 slot drive A+ slot drive camshaft
APT slot drive oil pump
APT CF-04 chilled iron lifters
Rollmaster vernier adjustable timing gear set
Romac Sport harmonic balancer
APT oversized aluminum water pump pulley
Winner Circle competition oil pan
ARP rod bolts, head stud kit, and flywheel bolts
Aluminum valve cover
Fidanza Aluminum flywheel
Everything will blueprinted and balanced.

I'll still be doing prep for alteast another week, then I should be able to start the build of the bottom end, after the bottom end is built, I will start porting and prepping the head.

Woohoo! Fun for Hap now, and even more fun for Ray later.

I'm sure happy with my engine, and all I've done so far is look at it.

Drew, I was gonna ask, but you clarrified yourself

Hap, Fidanza Aluminum flywheel = how many pounds?

Re: Ray's McCaleb's "The Spridget Project" motor build

Now, Ray, what's that going in?

And how many dollars? I want one.

11 pounds, try our supporting vendor here, BPNW for the best pricing, I used to sell these, but they are buying in such high volumes now they have priced the rest of us out of the flywheel business, I think they get a little over $350.00 for one. I've sold and used this product under race conditions for years, it's a good product.

Hap mentioned it, Tony, the "Spridget Project". That's the '62 Sprite that I've been working on (and documenting on my web site - see below) for the past 18 months.

For those that don't know, this will be a resto-mod...an early square body that at 10 feet and 60 MPH will look like a period street racer BUT when you get close will have a number of differences. SMOOTH, no bumpers, modified front turn indicators (small round, like on the TR2), no door or boot lid handles, Frenched-in tag, two windscreens (one cut down), no panel parting lines (beading on rear fenders removed), etc. The entire front clip has been assembled into a front tilt unit, like many racing Bugeyes have; the interior will be painted metal, aluminum racing seats, aluminum dash with Auto Meter gauges, and a removable steering wheel. The suspension comes out of the Winner's Circle catalog...new springs, front racing axles and spindles, urethane bushings, and shocks by Peter C. Putting it to the ground will be Superlites from Hap carrying Kumho 758s. Under the bonnet a Ron Davis aluminum radiator should add some cool, 123 distributor, Painless breaker panel and wiring harness, Tilton pedal box and MCs, Rivergate 5-speed through a 3.7 rear end (I have a spare 3.9 and 4.22 to also test), aluminum sheeting throughout the engine compartment, and ...the crown jewels... the 1275 by Hap sporting his rebuilt and polished SUs!

Too bad the cold weather is upon us...next step is to do some component painting (POR-15) but it needs to be above 70 and low humidity to flatten out...may be Spring before I can start back.

Go to Ray's website, www.raysmg.com there tons of pictures of the build there, look under the "The Spridget Project", check out the bodywork section, and read and look how Ray truely is bringing this car back from the dead.

Re: Ray's McCaleb's "The Spridget Project" motor build

Jack, actually, no. I considered an AC unit with heat strips, but you know how inefficient they are and how little heat they actually produce. Here in Georgia we don't have a lot of cold weather 6-8 weeks if were lucky (if we're not, fleas will be bad in the yard next summer!). And by cold, you know what I mean, lows in the upper twenties or low thirties mostly. So, seeing that I like working in 50-60 degrees just fine, and that's where my other garage normally stays in the winter, I decided to just use one or two of the tower type ceramic heaters out there and that will more than suffice. BTW...I've been using one in the living room and another in the bedroom for a couple years and the natural gas bill has cut in half and my power bill is only up around $20 a month when I use them...not a bad trade!

Problem is, POR-15 likes going on warm...I mean 70+ warm...and. I rebuilt the front suspension on the TR3 two winters ago and then painted everything...had a lot of brush marks, and that was with the garage around 60.

Tony, I have a lot of original parts that came out of the car; dash, heater, radiator, engine, trans, pedal box and MCs, etc. I'll put together a list later on and post it here, then whatever is left can go on Ebay. Seats and a few other thing are already gone.

Mike, there are some similarities...great minds thinking alike...or some such notion. The front clip is quite different but the rest looks somewhat familiar...I like your car! Some things I've had to compromise on...like wipers/motor...since it has to be street legal (well, more or less). I'd prefer to use a little Rain-x and go faster and save a few pounds on that motor and flex shaft..which in truth, are not much more than display only anyway.
