Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rear

Noticed this Sunday afternoon when we had Binabox out for a drive. On acceleration, there is a rather loud and distinct rattly clatter coming from the right rear. Stopped twice, crawled under her, couldn't see anything.

I'm thinking it could be transmission mounts or the driveshaft. We're about to go out and jack her up and have a proper look.

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

wire wheels right? be sure to check the brake drum nuts.

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

Will do so.

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

Should I be able to turn both back wheels and the driveshaft not move? Both in gear and in neutral?

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

Brake drum nuts are not loose.

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

Okay, it's definitely the driveshaft, but I can't tell if it's coming from the U-joint or not.

Yet.

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

Depends. Did you turn both at the same time or separate? If you did both at the same time and the D/S did not move you've got a serious problem. However if you turned one odds are the other was rotating the opposite direction which would be normal and the D/S would not turn. Have someone else hold a wheel and then move the other and the D/S should turn unless its seriously messed up.

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

Check that the shock mounting bolts are tight.

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

A U-joint usually sounds like the drive shaft scrapeing the muffler in a pulsating sound. Generally it does it when pulling a little. I have had one do it on deacceleration but that was another type of car.

Don't discount the exhaust. Can you make it happen when not moving by playing with the throttle? Check the fuel tank straps, shock bolts, shock links and look for loose spokes. Also check the bumper mounts and brackets and tail lamp assemblies. I guess you might as well check every nut and bolt before I list them all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

It's definitely the U-joint. When Chuck got home, he crawled under the car and said, 'yup.' Then John & Carol came over (stuffed registration packets for our car show tonight) John looked and confirmed it.

Cheap fix, O'Reilly has one in stock that they're holding for me. $17.95 and it includes the grease fitting, Moss wants $2 extra for the fitting. Plus I'd have shipping and have to wait some days.

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

NO idea. Clearly worn. Good thing it happened now though, before we head for Memphis in a couple weeks, or when I was on my way to KC.

Part of the nature of the beast I suppose. Drive 'em, fix 'em, drive 'em some more, fix 'em some more!

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

No, not nature of the beast! At least not on a brand new car. U-joints should last a long time. Since you didn't notice vibration, we can assume the driveshaft is in balance. Maybe you just got a defective u-joint. May want to carry a spare for a few thousand miles just in case something else contributed to it's demise.

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

U joints last forever mostly. Tens of thousands of miles.

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

One of the needle bearings could have slipped out during installation and caused premature wear

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

Good idea Steve.

I don't know what happened, but I'll suggest the spare, since this one went in 3 months/3000 or so miles. I know when John Mangles restored his A-V8, took it on its first long trip to Michigan last summer. Twist's party and the GLT (endurance rally) - his U-joint failed 1/2 way through the 24 hour rally with probably less that 1000 miles on the car since restore.

Guess I should add this to my list of faulty parts...

Re: Rattly, clattering noise coming from right rea

Maybe these just not being made as well as they should? Or you are correct basman, might have been messed up on install, easy to do.

Sorry Jaybird, least it happened at home. Is it still under warentee?? Only three K on Bina, did it cover drive train :p
