Racing Video

Here is an interesting race video from the cockpit of an MGB. What is interesting is the amount of data displayed including position on track. Anyone know how exactly this is accomplished?

HI Steve,
I would think something like this would fit the bill. I'm not sure if this is the exact system that was used in the video. The accel gauges and GPS speedometer are cool. Probably overlaid on the race footage in a video editing program.

I've seen systems like that before, but never one that did track position. I wonder if the system he used interfaces with something at the track itself? As for the video, I'm sure it was overlaid in post, not in real time.

Really Great vid!

Much cooler than the ~Very Basic One~ I just posted.

Nice shots of the Anglia, Cortina and the Renault Alpine. The split screen vid showing the MGB is probably just video editing.
The data acquisition system used may be one of many.
Here's a link to some of these units. At least one can be uploaded to a PC (with graphics that could be screen-captured and then edited in).

I notice the car had an O2 sensor on the dash too. Fun to watch...we have a similar-looking unit.

Pretty sure it's just GPS. The modern fast receiver boards can record 5-10 positions and are pretty accurate. Our mapping company put some stuff together like that for Daytona years ago when it was bleeding edge stuff.

Nial, the split screen is definitely edited in. It's easy to do.

Scott, good point. The track is probably programmed into the unit.

OK Steve, you sent a motor waaaay far away to get rebuilt (with some unmentioned go-fast goodies). Now you’re looking at racecar data acquisition. Getting into a new hobby?

No, I only sent the motor to Riverside. I drove it there myself! Not more than 80 miles or so each way.

I was just curious about this hardware, but admittedly one of my strongest desires is to get into vintage racing. Unfortunately I can't afford the type of car I want to race. It would sport an M.G. badge and would be at least 60 or more years old. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
