While looking for something else,I came accross
an old AA badge.It's #6C12616,from '62-'63.It's chrome,
with a Yellow background. It's in pretty good shape.
Is there any way of tracing the history on these?
Are they worth anything?
the ebay prices are pretty much what they go for, in part because there are so many good reproductions - where the enamel is intact. I have a new RAC badge on Ms Triss
It's not really possible to trace the history of these badges. Originally the serial number might have been allocated to a particular member, but the badges tend to stay on the cars when they are sold, etc.
They are always worth a modest amount, they are collectible but you're not gonna get rich from selling one. I'd like to get my hands on one, just for giggles. I was a member of the AA back in my youth.
Mount it on the grille of an LBC and parade it around....

The AA was formed early last century, 1905, whereas the RAC (Royal Auto Club) was a bit earlier at 1897. When I lived in England in the early nineties, I had amassed quite a collection of RAC and AA badges. Back then I would find them at jumbles and boot sales for a few pounds. Now they have been reproduced by some foreign entities, so you need to be careful. If the badge looks too perfect, it's probably is counterfeit. A pre-WWII original in good condition is worth several hundred $$$. One from the 1960's in decent shape OTOH is worth maybe $30-$50. The most valuable ones I have seen were issued in colonial countries, e.g., India, African countries, etc and worth thousands. However these examples were very very rare.
If you're really interested in the AA, I recommend this book. I think I picked up my copy at Gaydon.
