MGC R.I.P. - 1969 MGC #6845

Offline
1969 MGC #6845

Some are just too far gone to salvage.

No floors, no sills, rusty front wings, no boot floor...etc..etc...etc...

Her carcass is providing some great spares, though. Think of her as a new organ donor.

Complete running engine...automatic transmission...correct differential (3.307) for the automatic...etc.

I hate it for the C, but it happens...what'cha gonna do with the bonnet (I recently dropped a light on my newy painted '68 MGC's hood!)

Oh, what's that on the ceiling of the shop? Aluminum siding?

The bonnet and diff are going to stay here in St.Joseph.

The shoppe is that of my buddy, Pete Mantell, who lives about 1-1/2 miles south of me. It's an insulated and lined pole barn...with steel siding lining the interior.

Here's a shot of my barn...not quite as fance as Pete's...but it gets the job done!

I like what he's done to his ceiling - may look at that on my new part!

You did keep all the VIN tags/numbers/paperwork, i presume?

Yes...title and vin tags commission tags, etc are all secure.

We're not done dimantling yet. Lotsa stuff needs to be saved...ie slam panel and inner fenders, torsion bars, etc. We'll send as little as possible to the crusher.

Here's a better shot of the interior of the middle building. He has two smaller buildings and one storage area...all attached. The storage area is not lined.

Yep, looks good...I like it.

Wow,
I guess I should have started with a cleaner better car.
I put new floor, sills, door, trunk lid, dog bones patch
left rear quarter, patch the fender tops and a new bonnet
and thats just a "B" I would have fixed up a "C"
like that for sure!

Are the factory bonnet on the "C" aluminum or steel?
I have a "C" bonnet on my car, got it used and it's aluminum.

"C" bonnets are aluminum

Looking at the number of your MGC (#6845) made me go look at mine....my '68 roadster is #2677 which means it was produced in August '68; my '69 GT is #5782 built in Nov '68 during the 1st month of '69 production....4 months between the 2 different year model cars!

My green '68 is #3950
My red '69 is #6165

And, not ALL C bonnets are/were aluminum/aluminium! Some were made of steel...and some even had a center brace!

Well, you learn something new every day...I've never seen a steel MGC hood - or one with a cross brace!

If anyone wants a steel MGC bonnet, I know of one here in So Cal for sale. They are heavy buggers!

Rick, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe steel bonnets were only available as replacement items. MGCs always came with aluminum bonnets from the factory.

I didn't say FACTORY C bonnets....I said C bonnets....including and referring to the short run of bonnets made on the factory tooling in the '90s before the tooling was broken.

Oh, in that case I've got a couple of fiberglass bonnets!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

The cross braced bonnets are RARE....there is a thread regarding them over on the MG Enthusiast MGC BBS....probably in the archives by now....and the thread was originated before the capability of adding images started.

Have to be some modification made by somebody...the cross brace was left out because the hood itself had to be raised to fit the engine & tooling for the nagled/curved brace was too expensive - that plus the brace landed right where the carbs & their linkage went....I'd have to see a hood or photo to believe it (nothing personal, Rick)...or have someone tell me they'd seen a hood in person!

Trust me....there were some cross-braced MGC bonnets. I'll try to find the thread in the archives. Tony Giordano will also know about them.

Now you've got me on a mission, Tony!

I believe you - I've just gotta see how they fit!
