<span style="font-style: italic">"For four years, the couple lived with other refugees in eastern Siberia, far from the battles of World War II. At times, they lived above the Arctic Circle on the tundra, where winter temperatures plunged to 55 below zero Fahrenheit. He worked on a trans-Russia railway that Stalin wanted. She taught music. They traveled at times on frozen rivers, wrapped in layers of furs, hauled on reindeer-drawn sleds driven by Siberian Envenki natives. He still remembers the beauty of a Siberian woodland flower, blooming in a bank of snow."</span>

Lazar Kalmanson of West Hartford was born in czarist Russia, grew up during the rise of Hitler, lived through the Nazi invasion of Estonia, and endured life under Stalin. Years ago he detailed his life in memoirs for his daughter and grandchildren. On Tuesday, well-wishers gathered to celebrate his turning 100.

Sounds like an amazing story... My dad also came out of Russia during that time period... Joined the Russian army in WW2, became a German POW, was fortunate to be in western Europe after the war (just simply being fortunate to survive that experience!) and came to Canada in 1948...

Unfortunately, unlike Lazar, we were never able to archive his full story, he never talked about it much and when I thought about it more seriously it was too late as he succumbed to memory loss in a nursing home... One of my regrets... There are so many amazing stories from that time period of history, and I suspect most will never be fully known... Thanks to Lazar

So sorry... My dad never taught any of us kids Russian, I wish he had actually :savewave: but my mom was British so we just simply used English...

'smits folks RAN from both Hitler an' Stalin. Dad-in-law is a Kiev native, Mum-in-law is German-Youki... Herself was born in Oldham. long after th' mess was sorted and they'd found one-another.

These stories are myriad, those times chaotic.

I'm th' luckiest guy on planet to have found a daughter of those survivors as th' son of a survivor of th' Ardennes...
