What kind of car? New? Old?
Almost all the reputable new car dealers have internet sales people now. Usually they'll give you the cut-to-the-chase price without the BS. There are sites like cars.com that will help you get a realistic price (and the known invoice price, I think) for a new car based on the options you want and your location, then you can use that info to get the car you want from the dealer.
If you're looking at older cars I'd look to buy from private owners first, or a decent well known shop. Ask here and/or your local club for references.
