How many of you wish you could go to the PO's and ask " Why did you do that? "
I am accumulating a list.
Latest one Why did you replace the left front shock and not the right especially as the right front bounces up and down the blue jello.
Why did you disconnect the ignition warning light? Was it cos you got tired of it burning all the time?
Nice of you to put the auxilliary instrument panel on but why didn't you hook the wiring back up. After all its nice to have turn signals.
did you enjoy driving with the steering wheel off by about 45 degrees?
Puzzling.

Peter, there have been times when I wanted to slap the PO before I asked him why he did something.
Why did you use lamp cord to replace the ignition wiring?
I think the worst that has happened to me was a '65 Sprite I bought in California. The PO had the neighbors kid work on it, and the first thing he determined was that the battery was in wrong, never having seen a car with positive ground. So, he just turned it around. And, pointing at the float chambers, he told me it was leaking at "these filters."
This was also the car with the lamp cord strung from the ignition switch to the coil.
I did get the car much cheaper than her asking price because of all of it, though, so I guess there was some justice. I had the car purring the next day, and drove over to her house to show her! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
After I rebuilt the engine into a killer, I took her for a ride.

There are sound reasons why they're more often called DPOs than just POs... so much of what they've done just gets you all PO'ed.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Had a '61 sprite which the guy had designs on racing which was great it ran like a bat out of heck. Those cars had mechanical rev counters which did not work too well so he replaced it with an electronic one which worked great. only trouble was it was mounted as an auxillary panel leaving a large hole in the dash.

I've even had a few DFPO's! Sometimes get me to tell you about the Midget with a sheet of metal welded underneath it - had to cut it out to get to the transmission!

I have to wonder why the PO used the voltage stabiliser wires and a nearby brown wire to run a turn signal circuit, when the real one was working fine. How using those wires influenced the turn signals is a bit of a mystery as well.

There's also the matter of the terrible shape of the engine. Why did you let the engine get into such a terrible, worn-out state?

When I was 17 I had a 240Z that had lamp cord running from the headlights to the batterys. In order to have headlights you had to open the hood and 'plug' the headlight cord into the postive battery cable, even though the light switch turned on all of the other lights. I bought the car from a CSU student that needed tuition money and he was the bright one that came up with this arrangement.

I took the car home and looked into the wiring. A connection had come unplugged between the headlights. I hooked that connection back up and all was well. Never had any other problems with it. Luckily, I learned a lot at a young age when it came to PO's. Some are good, some are downright horrible.

To be honest when buying almost any old car that hasn't been enthusiast owned your bound to find at least one DPO move. And I am sure we've all been DPO's at some time, however owns my old Jeep probably isn't to happy with me.
The worst DPO I've ever bought from was the original owner of a 73 corvette rosdster, he'd played with(and mess up) everything. It had a 'bicks pickles' lid as a coolant tank overflow, he used RTV(a favorite product for DPO's) to install an afermarket alarm system and used that same RTV to 'seal' the convertible top to the windshield, household wiring to the radio and speakers, he also really messed up the wiring to the rear lights i basically had to rip it all out and rewire.
Close second is the TR6 I bought recently, from a 'neighbor'...It's very scary when someone who knows nothing about what they're doing *thinks* they know what they're doing.

My step dad grew up on a farm and still likes to think that he can fix anything with bailing wires and pliers. When he started to do some of his own work on his Porsches I told him he would be in for a rude and expensive awakening.

He used to do things that would qualify him as one of Tony's "DFPO's". Now, he does things the right way with the right tools and saves himself money and pain in the long run. As well as anyone that might purchase one of those cars from him when he decides to change the stable again.

I've always loved this one. Quite creative. There's more.
