Ok, I know the differential is supose to be black on a Bugeye but how about the alum lump. Is it painted or does it stay alum.?
 
Unless you sand blast it it is almost impossible to make it look good, Hitting it with a wire brush grinder leaves marks. Ended up painting my Sprite Black, looks great, read about your spring removal with interest. I but some serious heat to them and they came right out. Some times you get lucky.
