What are folks running on Bugeys, brand and size with standard wheels and that fit properly. I'm confused.

I am sure that replies you get might still keep you in the dark -; hehe, I recall previous threads being all over the place on this one.

One questions to clarify, are you going to be running the original steel wheels on Agatha?

This will greatly decrease the sorted responses, since we all have own rims and tire preferences.

whatever fits under the well without rubbing was the closest the last thread got to solving the mystery.....
heres a better question for u ,jack........
if ur tire says 35 lbs pressure, and the manual says 24, which is right? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ....zimmmmy
 
Orginial steel wheels guys.
 
I have run the original (3.5" rims, if memory serves me) with 145 80 13's. They were never a problem and looked good on the rim (the orig were closer to 135's) goiund to low profile or 155's would be too much.

However there is plenty of room in the well for larger tires, but the rims will not look right unless they are widened.

Please take this all IMHO and from past experience.

Jimmy, the sidewall pressure on the tire is the maximum pressure for the load rating of the tire, not the correct inflation pressure.

I spent quite some time on the Tire Rack website when I was sizing tires for my Bugeye with stock, steel rims. As I recall, the 80 series was the only profile that would safely mount on the 3.5" rims. Any lower profile, e.g. 70 series, required a minimum rim width greater than 3.5". In the end, I went with 155 80-13. The downside is that with so little cross section of tire on the road surface, it is like riding on rails at times.
When I finally get around to the '60 Bugeye project, I plan on giving Hap a shout and get a set of his version of the Minilite, which will allow for a lower profile tire.
 
I'm running 155/80R13 on the Tunebug (That's what was on there when I bought it).

The original is 5.20 x 13S Bias Ply. I seem to remember that a 145SR x 13 would be the right original size in a radial. When I bought my TR4, there was a paper taken from somewhere that listed modern tires and their old LBC equivalents.

From this sheet:

5.20x13 = 5.2" wide, 22.36" diameter
145/80R13 = 5.71" wide, 22.13" diameter, wheel 4" - 5.5" wide
155/80R13 = 6.10" wide, 22.76" diameter, wheel 4" - 5.5" wide
165/80R13 = 6.5" wide, 23.39" diameter, wheel 4.5" - 5.5" wide
175/70R13 = 6.89" wide, 22.65" diameter, wheel 5" - 6" wide
 
Well that's two folks for 155/80R 13

Anyone know what the R is for off hand?
 
R = Radial tires, Jack.

R is the speed rating for the maximum speed a tire can travel.

Q- Up to 100mph
R- Up to 106mph
S- Up to 112mph
T- Up to 118mph
U- Up to 124mph
H- Up to 130mph
V- Up to 149mph
W- Up to 168mph
Y- Up to 186mph

Haha, don't think they make a tire slow enough for Bugeyes.

Pat, Jack and Baz,

I think you guys have some confusion here. Baz is correct that R referrs to Radial in that location on the tire size. However, Pat is also correct that R refers to a 106mph speed rating. The problem is there there is a missing letter there. For example, the tires on my Saab are listed as 205/60ZR - 13. The Z is the speed rating, the R stands for radial. You are missing either the R for radial designation or the character for speed rating.

I think with tires this small, the normal rating/R thing may not quite apply. When I got a 155 for the spare wheel, the folks at the tire place said the /80 part was reduntant--tires this small are all 80 section.

Besides, for a Bugeye we'd need like a "D" rated tire, good for 50mph (at least in my case)! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tire Rack does not seem to have these sizes. Where do they come from? What brands are available? Anyone know off hand?
 
They have 155/80 13's. I just checked.
