The orginal workshop manual says:

"Place the phosphor gronze thrust washer over the swivel axle. Put a shim on to the swivel pin, follwoed by the trunnion............"

However the pic shows the shim under the thrust washer. Now, mine are not apart but which is correct. I think mine are too tight but want to check for proper shime placement as well.
 
No shim touches the bronze washer. the shims sit on the shoulder on the swivel pin. Maybe you are seeing the O-ring for the dust tube in the diagram?
 
Yes, the shims will slip thru the hole in the bronze washer. Many times they sort of stick to the grease inside the bronze washer when you take them apart.
 
OoooK then. The shim actually spaces the trunon from the swivel axle and actually keeps the weight of the car off of the thrust washer to a certin extent. Cool, got it, understand. Wonder if I put those thrust washers back in and how tight the thrust washers really are. Can't wait to find out. That could very well be my stearing not returning to center smoothly and quickly.
