So...
My snowblower failed Monday afternoon....the drive gear went south. This is the fourth season of use for this machine.
I got the machine into a small engine repair shoppe today....the drive gear bolt was a Grade 8 bolt (from the factory)...and had snapped in half. The technician commented that this is the third bolt this season that he's seen do this...all Grade 8. He replaced it with a Grade 5 bolt.
I had used the blower for about 3-1/2 hours (continual) in <20*F weather on Monday....the snow was deep but not extremely heavy.
Would the cold weather and continual use cause the Grade 8 bolt to become brittle and fail whereas a Grade 5 bolt would not?
Just curious.
BTW....the shoppe had me repaired and out the door in less than 1/2 day...more than accomodating and good customer service in my book!
