MGB Question re '70 MGB Shoulder Belts

John:

The book "Original MGB" does show the belts on early 70s MGBs attaching as you describe. They had a metal plate that snapped onto the chrome pegs on the upper-deck of the car. I don't know how they attached to the lap-belt but I imagine it was another similar post that snapped into another metal plate (most of the airplane shoulder-belts I've used are similar to that).

They also show in the book the Tonneau cover with small holes for the belt attach-points.

Scott, thanks. I looked in that book earlier and couldn't find a picture. After your post I looked again and, sure enough, someone must have slipped it in when I wasn't looking.

Thanks again.

Can someone tell me how the shoulder belts worked on a '70 MGB roadster? I assume that they were separate pieces that attached to the chrome studs up on the rear scuttle (is that the right terminology?) with a keyhole shaped slot but have never seen them. The various books/catalogs I have are no help for this year. Thanks.

i have the same type of seatbelt mounts on my '70.
They have the name Kangol on them with a Brit patend number. the shoulder attachement is a key type affair that slips down and locks over the bolt on the rear skuttle, the lock is simply a plastic key that keeps the attachment from backing off. the lower mount is a typical bolt thru mount. the latch itself is interesting in that rather than having a key type insert there is a hook from the shoulder strap that simply hooks over a bar in the latch assemble from the strap on the console. I have been looking for replacements but todate have found none, that i recall. i don't think moss nor v.b. carrier them.

Dad's '71 has these as well, and I've not seen a replacement for them anywhere. We've just got lap belts for the moment. Don't want to try and figure out how to fit inertia reels (although I'm sure it could be done).

While we're on a thread about Brit seat belts....
many of the later inertia reel belts were Federally recalled and free replacement was offered. I got a note about this quite a while ago (for the '78 Midget), but I believe it affected a bunch of Brit cars (and may be still valid....these recalls are usually without a time limit). I was told to take the car to my local Rover dealer. My car has 5 point race harnesses, so I didn't bother. This might be a chance for some of you to get a new set of belts at no cost (I'm sure there's a "recall website" with more info somewhere on the net).
