Spitfire Question on VIN and engine number for spitfire

Hi their.

I have a question about Commission numbers and engine block numbers. I just bought a 1973 spitfire a little over a month ago with a Commission number of FM5345U but my engine number says FM3641UF does that mean that the engine is not the original engine? Guess I am a little confused if they are suppose to match?

Thanks

Scott

Those numbers usually don't "match" in the sense of being identical; rather, "matching" numbers means that the major components bear the same number assigned to each when the car was built. That said, FM3641UF (that last character is probably a poorly stamped "E" for engine, BTW) is a bit lower a number than I might expect, leading me to wonder if it might have been an early-on replacement? It's still in the right range for a 1973 model year engine, though.

Thanks Bob and Andrew. Now you said that about matching numbers that make sense and I will have to look to see if that is a poorly stamped E. Not sure if the engine was replace or not. The guy I bought it from never said anything about an engine swap or anything like that. I am also trying to pull the tranny number but that is a little harder as it is dirtier then the engine.

Thanks for all your help

Hey Andrew, You are correct it is an E. The bottom part of the E is so close to the end off the block it looked like it was just that the end of the block.
