Question on luggage racks

Would this luggage rack fit the factory holes on my 68 mgb?

I like this luggage rack better than my factory one, it looks lower profile. Thanks in advance for the help. -Wilks

Welcome to the forum Wilks,

The rack pictured is (was) the stock option for the later MGBs like my 78 Rubber Bumper. While I never tried - I assume that it would fit your older B. Either way as I understand all the truck (boot) lids are interchangeable.

Regardless if you really want on of these - I'd go ahead & grab the first one you can find, as these are no longer made and are getting kind'a hard to find. Folks are always asking me if I'd like to sell mine. Nope, not gonna happen! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

If the holes don’t match up perfectly - plug the old holes and mount the new one.

Good Luck!

I don't think the holes will line up at all. The flat bar-style rack in the picture uses two holes per corner, spaced about 1.5" apart vertically (maybe more or less, I'm guessing).

They actually are available brand new (sorry Bret /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif ) from Moss Motors, although fairly expensive. The original ones are occasionally available on eBay brand new in the box and are usually a lot cheaper than the new one from Moss.

Hmm? What can I say he’s right. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif Don’t know how I messed that one up, I thought the last time I checked were an N/A item. Anyway, like he said they ain’t cheap. Personally, while I like the look of a luggage rack, I could think of a lot of other things I’d spend my $263.95 on.

I have one of these for sale. I bought it for my Midget (thinking they were all the same. oops!) and found it doesn't fit (the arc of trunks are different plus the rack is bigger than the Midget's). Email me if anyone want more info. cindykelley@mac.com

Hey Wilks,

IF Bret's right about the lids being interchangable, and if the price is right for the item in your link, then don't rule out respraying the lid being auctioned to match your ride. Then you can install the "extra" lid with the rack and preserve your original without having to modify it.

Just a thought.

Look closely at the rust area. It looks to me like it is very uneven around there like there may have been a previous bondo job that was never sanded properly. So I would be a little suspicious that it is only surface rust.
