Question on Engine Compression

Hi,

I checked the compression of my BN6 engine today: 6.0 to 6.5 bar. The BN6 of a friend of mine came up with 7.0 to 7.5 bar. Does anybody know what a "good" compression for a 6 cylinder should be?

Volker

vOLKER 9 OR 10 BAR WOULD BE A GOOD READING. 7 Bar is a bit low.---KEOKE

Keoke,

Thank you very much for your opinion. I will check this in more detail with a classic car garage.

Hello ,

if you compare some measurements, you have to know in which condition the measurements are done. I open always full the throttle on a warm engine.
The important result should be that all values are nearly on the same level.
If some value is very low , I fill oil in the spark plug hole and wait 2 minute and check again. If the value is higher, it can be a indication of bad piston rings or cylinder wearing.

My last measurements on my BT7 engine was 11 bar

So good luck .

germanmichel,

the values are at the same level (6.0 to 6.5 bar) but the engine was cold when the measurement was done. Does this have any influence on the result?

Volker

By the way: German members are very rare in this forum. May I ask you where you are located?

Hello Volker,

on a hot engine you receive compression results in the real working condition, this is the reason why I check it on a warm engine.
I know you does not want to hear that, but normally the mesurement values on a cold engine are a little bit higher (up to one bar).
The different results comes from the different oil viscosity.

Michael,

You are right, we are very lonely between the sunny states guys. When I bought this British classic car I did not expect that the biggest part of the communty is located in th US.

Yes, most of them were sold over here. The Brits badly needed money in those days and so they had to export most of their car production to bring it into the Country.
