Question, Oil pump

Now to pull the engine, guess that will start Fri. need to replace oil pump, and clean up tranny second gear, think the indent on the shifting rod at the netural position side has a burr.

No clue as to how I am going to get one of those oil pumps in. It did not want to fit under the cover when I tried last, I guess I need to see or figure what is holding it out and do a bit of cutting or shaveing on the pump case. Who would have thought. Anyone else had this problem?

This really bothers me, has anyone else had to do this to get a pump to fit on a 948. How do I determine what is holding it out? Suggestions on how to figure it welcome?

Had another thoutht as well, wonder if the back plate on the engine is a different model plate than 948? Came off this block but no clue what tranny it was mounted to or what had happened in the past. Are all the rear plates the same? Guess when it is out I can check the part number.

Need some ideas folks this engine pull is going to be very very soon now. Need to get Miss Agatha so she is driveable anywhere anytime.

Been thru all this a few weeksago.......

Look at the hole in the case (block) that the oil pump fits in. There is a register that is smaller diameter than the hole. The register is about .040" smaller in diameter than the hole, is at the bottom of the hole, and locates the o.d. of the oil pump.

The shelf on the register is about .250" deep.

There are some oil pumps that the usual suspects sell that arent the correct o.d. thus wont bottom in the hole and the register.

So check that first. Also some aftermarket pumps are too tall at the back three bosses and need to be trimmed slightly. But thats a separate issue and only bumps the dust cover.

It's been a long time since I did my race engine for my BE but I think I had to make the bolt heads smaller and grind away part of the pump case. If right I used a 1275 Cooper S high output pummp.

Good luck with the project

Remember that there were three different types of pumps depending upon cam before you start to go swapping.

Also, the early back plates and later are a different thickness.

It has been a while since I have done a 948 and at that time the pumps fit was not an issue.

Sorry not much help.

Good advise, will let you all know what I find next week.

I bet, I just bet that Jerry has the answer. It sounds so right that the pump diameter is a bit to big. Easy fix that.

Yep I do have the correct pump for my cam.
