Question-generators

This just may be my dumbest yet.

On the front of the generator goes the fan, flat side out, then the pully, alm side in.

Ok what holds the fan in place on the inside and what keeps it out where the key engages to keep it from spinning.

What the heck did I miss here. Seems like there needs to be a sleeve or something?

Jack - I can't help you with your generator question since my MG has an alternator and I have never taken a MG generator apart but I have restored many old cars. You need to take many pictures (digital pictures don't cost a thing) while you disassemble the car and its' parts. Also take many notes and make drawings of the item. Also identify and bag all parts. Staple your notes and drawings to the bags. You will be amazed that an easy task you did 6 months ago now seems very difficult because you have forgotten exactly what you did or how the item came apart. I cannot stress enough how keeping the workplace clean and orderly and taking notes, making drawings, and bagging parts makes a restoration enjoyable and the finished car a much nicer restoration.

But... what if you buy a car disassembled?

Hehe, I know this darn Bugeye inside and out.

Anyway if you read the directions first it takes all the adventure out of it.

There is a spacer between the bearing and outside but it is not long enough to do the trick.

Next trick is disassembly on the generator and see if it is in fact correct seems the armiture is too far forward but don't really think that can happen. Thinking.........

Trevor - then you better be an MG expert. You never know when buying a disassembled car if you have all of the parts.

I am, I am. This is my third Bugeye and my second basket case. In fact this was not even a basket case. The tub did not have any baskets with it. Jolly and I just moved around his warehouse and selected things that were required and pitched them in the back of my truck. The tub was a rolling tub only, all was striped but had no rust. Check out my pic site. Have had a Bugeye over 30 years of my life. There are no susprises anymore. Just challanges. Hehe.

I have just forgotten something, or something is out of alignment maybe, senior moment I suspose.

Oh, forgot to say. I learn something new all the time it seems.

No ideas?

jack, i'm not sure where your original question got to (lost in the clutter), but i believe when i put the fan and pulley back on my generator, the fan sat against a backstop on the shaft such that the nut compressed the fan and pully together against the back of the shaft. i do remember that if the fan was installed backwards it hit the casing. anyway the shaft is keyed so that takes care of the pulley/fan from turning on the shaft. hope some of this helps.

Yep, agree with you, however the spacer seems to set too far in against the bearing for it to push the fan out far enough to engage the key. Fan blades are supose to be toward the generator by the way.
The fan actualy goes in past the key and then will indeed hit the generator.

Got to be something stupid here, guess I am going to have to disasemble the generator and see what's what.

okay, i have a book and pictures at home. if you're still puzzled, i will send you what i have.

i do remember having similar problems to what you described but figured it out eventually. let me check.

Generator apart and back together now, no problems there.

Looks like it needs about an additional 1/8 spacer to make all work ie fan to stand off enough to miss endplate and engage key. Guess a couple of washer would work, wonder if pully would line up properly at that point?

I see no part listed in the orginal parts list nor in Moss, strange this.

i don't remember any spacers either. what the moss cat. shows is what i had when disassembled. not sure what's going on with your gen.

jack,
from looking at my gen, the fan goes on first and can only go one way. the other way hits the case. the pulley is next and has a square nut on one side. that nut goes up against the fan. then a washer and nut to finish. there is no spacer. again make sure the fan and the pulley are turned to the right side when installing ... good luck.

Yep, agree. Still need a spacer on mine. Sooooo, think I will make one.

Darned if I understand it.

Thanks for checking.

Told ya I was haveing a senior moment and was thinking.

Gesh dumb me, the end bolt holds the fan in place it does not have to be on the key, boy I feel stupid.

Had to grind a 1/32 bit off an ear but that no prob at all.

Any way, all is well, sorry about this post.

Jack,

Did you disassemble the generator I sent you? Check to see if the front bearing is seated correctly in the front plate and make sure the bearing retainer is not bent. What ear did you have to grind? Phil
