Well, I do not know if we have any audio component gurus here, but checck that you are getting power and a proper ground. If that checks out OK, then it may need to be replaced.

Depending on how modern the unit is, check the back of the radio. There is often another fuse there, and if so, you should try "jiggling" it, or replacing it altogether. Should be a 10amp fuse if it's there...........

What do you mean by not working? (I'm assuming this is an orginal radio). The first two things you want to check are power and a proper ground. This can be done quite easily with a volt meter. If you get 12 volts across the leads, then you're getting power.

The next thing to check is if you're getting an output from the radio. An Oscope would be best for this, but given they cost big bucks, I'd just use the meter again and test for some current going through while you're playing music.

Finally measure the ohms across the speakers, there's a chance that they're both blown.

Midgetboy can't wait for dad to get out there and try to fix it. It is not the original radio. The head unit comes on and lights up, and looks like it is working, but no sound comes from the speakers. I suspect the head unit is dead or dying, probably have to be replaced. The PO had it installed 5 years ago, but put very few miles on the car. It is possible the wires are shorted in the back, the head unit is crammed in there quite tight. I had the console loose once, (to get to the 4 way flasher switch in order to get the turn signals to work and the radio worked after that, but it sure won't work now.

Wow, I'd love this, post a problem and have a family member come and fix it for me!

Georgia,

If the unit lights up, I'd suspect the speakers getting shorted out (I know the radio I just put in yesterday is jammed up there against that metal dash). Try the meter to look for a signal. There's also a fuse in some modern radio's that will blow if shorted, but the unit still appears to work.

Tell us how it goes.

Ben

I don't know if it applies, but with the newer unit in my midget I sometimes have to remove the power entirely to the radio. There is one wire which is hot all the time and one which is hot only with the ignition on. For some reason the radio will fail to function correctly. I just remove the battery cable and re-install.
