Question about ID Tags

I may be way off base here; however, I read somewhere that when these cars were new and were originally titled, the year the car was sold determined what was on the title?

This could mean that id tag 8722 could be a 59 and 8733 could be a 58, depending which sold first? is that right. I think I read this about a gas tank on a mgb having a strapped gas tank compared to a bolt on gas tank.

I think you are right, but it may depend on the state that issues the first title. My '66 Sprite was built 1-3 Feb 1966, delivered 2 Mar 1966 by export to the USA. In addition to showing a model year of 1966, my AZ title shows 10/1966 as the Mo/Yr First Registered. Apparently, the Mo/Yr First Registered is a piece of data that gets carried forward - my car was previously titled by my Father in ND before transferring the title to me. He acquired the car used approximately in 1967. Makes me wonder what happened with the car from 2 Mar 1966 and 10/1966 - sitting on a dealers lot???

In addition to the model year specified on the title, you also have to consider all the production changes that occurred during the model year. Changes like a strapped vs bolted gas tank could have easily occurred within one model year.
