I hope this is the correct forum for my little story and I hope you find it interesting. I don't know about you, but I find that half the fun of purchasing any older car is the search/find and negotiations that are involved in the buying of an older car.
Last week, I found a 72 TR6 sitting on a used car lot that was connected to a auto salvage yard. The car was covered with snow and the tires were low from sitting. Upon closer look, I found that this was an almost rust free car with new metal front fenders,new trailing arm hardware, clean interior with only surface rust under the floor mats,new front end parts, new battery (that needed a jump, due to sitting for so long) and what appeared to be rebuilt carbs and new tune up wires,plugs etc.
Being that I live in Chicago and the temp. is in the low single digits,I felt I might be able to strike a great deal. As expected, the engine turned over, but would not start. Upon looking closer at the carbs while the dealer was trying to start it, I noticed the choke cables were not working and the dealer didn't even know there was a choke cable. Anyways, the dealer was asking $3500.00,but because it was winter and wouldn't start, he said he'd take $2500.00. After some serious discussions, we settled on $1500.00. I told him I'd be back in 2 days with the cash.
Upon getting home, I realized I have 7 cars and no room for an 8th. So I turned my neighbor onto the car and the next day he went and purchased it for the $1500.00.(Another British car owner is born).
Anyways, I thought $1500.00 for a clean, no body damage, not running, but engine turns over TR6 was a great deal.
Now for the bad news, When the dealer was flat bedding the TR6 to my neighbors house, the chain broke on the trailer and the car rolled forward and broke both lights,light rims and buckets and caused minor front body damage. Needless to say, the great buy had become a nightmare. My neighbor settled for and additional $150.00 off the price of the car and called it even.
Upon me getting home from work and looking at the car, within 15 min. we had it running almost like new. So, it was a great buy after all.The minor front end damage can be fixed for about $100.00.
A running, almost rust free, with just slight front end damage for $1400.00, WHAT A BUY.
