Pulling the tranny...

As my late father always said..

'If there isn't time to do it right... there will always be time to do it over...'

Quickly -- When I had the tranny out during the restoration I had it rebuilt at a local shop. Second gear grinds upshifting and down unless I am very gentle or throw a great double-clutch.

I THOUGHT that this was normal until I had an opportunity to drive a friend's '57 Magnette last night. This car has the same drive train as the A. All the gears (2,3,4th) shift up and down without a wimper or groan...

SO... I will need to pull the tranny to RE-re-build it... This project will be undertaken either now IF I do not need to dis-assemble the tunnel and all of the freshly installed carpeting and floorboards or LATER if I do...

This also opens up a world of 'Just as Wells'... You know, everything that I didn't do quite right the first time...

Any comments on the best course of action??

Shift gently.

Second gear balk ring... it MAY even have actually been replaced. But with one of too-soft material, there was a spate of poorly made ones released a while back. It should have been a sintered iron one. Not meaning to be a poop but if you want to shift it easily it's R&R time. Another concern is what it's doing to the associated cone, teeth, layshaft and bearings in the meantime.

Ron, I think this message should be under the "what are you gonna do this weekend" thread. :wall: :thirsty: :thirsty:

Hey Doc... Good afternoon...

My friend with the Magnette has has offered to give me one of his spare, non-rebuilt, trannies that I can rebuild and then replace in the A....

Have you ever pulled a tranny from an assembled MGA and did you need to do a major disassembly of the passenger compartment???

I guess I am looking for opinions on the best course... I suspect that I will need to pull the engine and tranny out and then mount the new tranny and reinstall...

This is not a major undertaking but my major concern is the removal of the large bolt that holds the rear mount to the frame and its clearance of the tunnel... and the possible removal of all the accoutrements in the passenger compartment...

While I am at it, I will likely replace the 'felt seal' timing chain cover with one with a rubber seal, and a myriad of other 'just as wells'....

Any thoughts???

Thanks.

Just be careful when you say this! Last time I said it was 1.5 years ago, and I'm still a year or so from getting the car back on the road.

19_again...

Too true... although it won't be this weekend since I have the annual Coronado July 4th Parade on Friday and the car, and me, will be participating.. :driving:

Sooo... the question still stands .. 'this weekend' 'tis cleaning adjusting and doing anything, that won't be major, that will make it look and run at its best..

drooartz,

Too true.... I gotta stay focused and 'get 'er done' as they say...

After all my B is ready to go under the knife and I can't do more than one major project at a time...

Unless you have recently had all the floorboards out and reinstalled them with fresh screws, pulling the engine is far faster.

If your buddy's trans is from a Maggot it ain't gonna fit - you need the identical trans as you have now and there are 3 different patterns for the bellhousing (4 including the Magnette).

Once the trans is out replacing the synchro isn't a hyge job. Do check it out for 'sparkle paint' in the ooil though.

On the old brass synchro trans, we used to mate a Datsun synchro ring that lasted much better than the MG items.

Bill,

I went to my friends house on Sunday and we found four trannies in his stack-o-stuff that appear to be from an A, shift tower and all. Although his poison of choice is the Magnette, he has owned several MGAs and figures that these joined his collection of parts when he was rebuilding an A or two...

He will be taking them to an MG specialist in San Diego tomorrow who will determine which of them is rebuildable and which will fit into the A.... Using a steel synchro instead of the brass one...

Once a tranny is ready to go I will take the A to his house and pull the engine/tranny, mate the new tranny to the engine and re-install.... He has a GREAT garage with a pit that will make the job so much easier...

Since I have less than a K mile on the clutch, Pressure plate, and accoutrements, no additional parts will be necessary -- I hope....

I will keep you appraised.
