TR6 Pulling the starter

Can the starter be removed and re-installed without pulling the trans tunnel?

I had my starter out when I pulled the trans to repair the clutch, and before I put it back I bench tested it just fine. After the trans went back in, I re-installed the starter (w/ the tunnel out), and tried it a few times to make sure it worked. Now that the interior is almost completely back in, I went to start the car and the solenoid no longer works. I can easily get to the bottom bolt, but I can't see how to reach the upper one. I can see it from the top, but I can't get the wrench to reach it.

I'm certain I can fix the solenoid, but if I have to pull the tunnel back out to replace this thing, I'm getting a new starter.

Thanks all.

I'm not sure how well this would work on a TR6. On my TR3A, I was able to reach the nut behind the engine by sliding a "tappet" wrench (which is an extra-long, thin open end wrench) down the firewall and turning the bolt until the flats lined up. To reinstall, I taped the nut to the wrench and again turned the bolt while holding the wrench still.

Eventually, I hit on the idea of putting a Helicoil into the bellhousing flange and eliminating the nut entire. Makes it a lot easier! But I also pitched the troublesome Lucas starter and went with a modern Japanese gear drive. It only lasted about 10 years though, so maybe not as big an improvement over the Lucas as I thought at first :D

I was able to figure it out. When I reassembled it, I had the nuts on the trans housing, with the bolts going through from the starter. From the top, the trans housing clears the body by the width of a wrench, but with the heater lines, carb linkage, and electrical wires right there, it's a bit of trouble to get a wrench on the nut, and it would be impossible to reassemble it that way. You would never get the nut started on the bolt threads. Like most jobs, getting things apart is always easier.

So I got it out, took the solenoid apart, cleaned it, and it works fine. And I put the starter back in with the bolts running from the trans housing side to the starter. I also replaced the bolts and nuts with flanged ones, so it's even easier to hold them in place with the wrench.

Ahh, an easy one....:D
