pulling engine but need help....pictures!!

WOW!! That's a rusty little sucker...yep, there's where I disconnected it...the yoke that's inside the transmission just slides out of the trans.

Hello and welcome to the forum, before you remove the eng. and trany drain the oil from the tranny or you will have oil pour out of the rear.

I didn't understand the reasoning behind taking the driveshaft off/apart when I did mine earlier this year. Just start pulling the engine forward the driveshaft slides right out of the gearbox, right? It was pretty easy to slide it back in as the engine/gearbox was put back in. Why bother? I've only had my Midget for one season so don't go by me but I pulled mine and swapped gearboxes and got it back in and didn't screw anything up (still find that hard to believe!).

Tony, That's impolite to call someone's car rusty. He lives in Massachusetts. I have lived there myself, and yes they have a lot of rust. But they don't have a lot of choice in the matter. The roads are salted with no mercy.

I never liked reaching inside the shifter hole while the engine/trans is looming over, just waiting to smash my hand, and trying to get the prop shaft inserted. If it's released from the rear axle it might be a bit easier.

alright. thx alot for the adivice that clears up my question.
tons of rust bec i live on an island. just means more work for me...FUN!!!

use a rope to hold the shaft
up when ur ready to reinstall....z

That's what I did too (probably because you told me to!).
Through the shifter hole. Just looped it under the shaft and pulled the rope up and weighted the ends or tied it or something. Got the engine/tranny "close" and slid it in, then just kept backing in the engine.
General thoughts from a recent first timer:
Even though I had a tilt mechanism on my hoist, I still struggled to get enough angle to clear coming and going. I was alone though. Add a helper and that's probably quite a bit easier.
Hoist arm was just barely long enough to reach far enough to in/out. I had the whole car high on stands so my hoist "legs" could clear alright but plan for clearance under the car as the hoist moves in and out, axle stand placement and such, room to crawl under.
Getting the radiator bolts out and back in was harder then the engine pull.
Getting the sequence right as motor mount detachment, reinstall is important too. Look it up here. I forget already, but it's something like remove the engine plate from the mount bracket on the left but remove the whole mounting bracket on the right....don't quote me on that.

this is being done on nantucket mass.
kinda learning as im going along with this project, but my teacher gave me this car and i ambushily took it now its time to get it done. does anyone have simular logs of how they have rebuilt there healey?
