So - and I'm just asking here - what would happen if I tried to use this pulley with a thin fan belt? Oh, say, for an alternator conversion that I was nearly done with.....

World Destruction....

Good question for the experts though...

For one, the belt would probably bottom in the pulley. That might cause it to slip, and would also mean the accessories would be turning slower.

The angle of the belt and the width of the belt both need to match the pulleys. In some cases you can get by with a slightly narrower (or wider) belt than designed as they will sit a bit lower or higher in the grooves, if the angles are right. In this case, there is no chance that it will work, in my amateur opinion. I think narrow pulleys that match alternators are available.

You could robably get home for short emergency ride, but you dont want to put it together like that.I got the mossss tan eliminator small belt kit ,advertised as 3/8,but really 8mmx10mm.Mached the Kubota alternator, with matchitg pump pulley.Made fore a very easy conversion. They sell the components separate, althought crank pulley set up is for no fan.I think VB had a 1/2 conversion advertised for use with fan ,and they also sell components.
Have fun

I tried that briefly many years ago. Didn't work at all. The narrow belt didn't get any traction on the wide crank pulley, even with the alternator disconnected (so not taking any power to turn).

Only cost me $10 to have the old generator pulley bored to fit the alternator, but that was around 1975 or so. Likely it would be a bit more these days.

BTW, NAPA sells a wide belt that, although not exactly the same width as the original, seems to fit and work very well. It's cogged and thinner than the stock belt, so much easier to install (even on the side of the road). Since it rides just a bit lower in the pulleys than the original belt, it also allowed the alternator to be adjusted outward farther than the generator (which I needed for clearance between the alternator and engine).

I didn't reuse the one from TS39781LO, but it still looked serviceable.

Thanks guys.

I have what turns out to be an incomplete/wrong conversion kit. The alternator pulley and water pump are correct, the fan pulley is wrong. Not sure if I can machine it to fit. Ugh.

Thanks for the info - will need to regroup here unless anyone has a correct fan pulley just sitting around...
