Have 76B with dual HS-4s. Have been running PH43 oil filter. Recent sale at AutoZone on Castrol and STP oil filter says the 76 should be using a 3614 filter. Can anybody tell me which is best.
ps. Has oil cooler.
 
What brands are you talking about - & how does PH43 cross check with 3614?
 
Their Fram filters Tony. I think, but not sure, the 3614 is the premium one over the PH43. Otherwise the same. Gotta check this out!
 
The PH43 is a Fram that is about 4" high by about 3 1/2" diameter. The 3614 is an STP that is about 3" high and 3" dia. They are totally different. Seems as if one of the Fram equivalents might be a PH16. The books all say the 3614 is the filter (books at the store).
 
Toss them both....don't use anything FRAM....STP's not much better either.
 
I prefer Crossland but there'll be others people like....just don't use FRAM!
 
I use NAPA or Baldwin filters. Baldwin on my tractors and NAPA on the cars and trucks. I've never had a problem with either one.
 
They allow more particulates through than most other filters...think when they were tested against other filters, Purolater came in first & Fram was way down in the bottom.
 
Napa are WIX filters which consistently rate amongst the top. Fram are better than nothing and if you change the oil regularly will do just fine. The use of a Fram filter has not lead to catastrophic engine failure AFAIK.
 
Just out of curiosity, anyone know what brand of filter came on the engines from the factory?
 
I stopped using Fram oil filters about 10 years ago when the quality went south. Based on some recommendations here on the board, I have been using Mann W917 oil filters. They are reasonably priced, have a good anti-drain back valve and are available at any Volvo dealership.

I don't know what the factoty used, but back in the day when I took my 1980 MGB to the BL dealership they put in Unipart oil filters.

Unipart was what the dealer used on my '79 also.

I just found out they, (Unipart), can be bought out of Ontario, Canada. Nice to know.
